Three rhino horns were stolen from Museum of Natural History in Florence Wednesday June 8. The three horns are valued at tens of thousands of dollars and the incident is among a series of museum thefts that occurred in Europe in the last month.rhino.horn.jpgThe door to the “hall of skeletons” in the Specola had been forced open, the police reported, and the thieves are suspected to have escaped through a back door after taking possession of the three horns. One of the horns stolen stretches over a meter long. The police believe the museum closed with the thieves inside on the night of the incident as they were most likely hidden in a courtyard. The surveillance personnel set off the alarm and notified the police when they discovered the theft. The search for the thieves continues. Police are working with specialists to find traces that the thieves may have left behind.Rhino head and horn thefts have occurred in at least five European museums in the last month. Museums across Europe have been advised to take rhino heads and horns off display for fear of more thefts. Many of the heads stolen, were found later with the horns no longer attached, as they are the most valuable parts of the animal.Though the trade of rhino horns is illegal, many believe they are being sold on the Asian market to make traditional medicines. Rhino horns are also sold on the Asian market as aphrodisiacs, though the sexual power of the horns has not been proven. Their use in medicine is questionable and most likely not beneficial, according to rhino conservation organizations. Giovanni Pratesi, president of the Specola, believes the museum’s stolen horns are destined for the Asian market because of these medicinal myths.“He who is convinced of the effectiveness of these items is ready to work with all the means in order to gain possession,” Pratesi said.
